Wuyang has been teased as the next upcoming hero for Overwatch 2 across the last couple of seasons. Finally, players have a little more insight into who he is and his origin story through the Against The Tide comic.
This comic has been released leading up to Wuyang’s gameplay trailer on August 14, as well as his hero trial from August 15 to August 19, 2025. Finally, the upcoming Support hero will be implemented into the game at the start of Season 18, so there’s not much longer for players to wait!
Until then, we now have a glimpse at Wuyang’s origin story. Against The Tide can be read on the official Blizzard website, or watched in video format over on OW2’s YouTube channel – complete with narration from Wuyang’s voice actor, Howard Wang. Take a look below:
Overwatch 2 Wuyang Origin Story: Against The Tide
Basically, Wuyang’s home base is a college where students go to study different elements. His family is notoriously known for carrying on the tradition of being Fire College students, trained as soldiers to use the fire element for combat purposes.
His sister, of course, passes the entrance exam with flying colors. Poor Wuyang, on the other hand, only scores high enough to attend Water College, where people learn to use the water element for medicinal purposes. This causes some conflict with his family and even himself, struggling with feelings of being a disappointment.
But Wuyang doesn’t give up. He starts studying Fire College lectures on the down-low, and even designs himself a new combat staff based on the concept of his sister’s fire spear – but for water. Honestly, at this point with all of the elemental influences and troubled sibling relationship, I couldn’t help but be reminded of ATLA’s Zuko and Azula. Just, y’know, on a lesser extreme.
And Then Everything Changed When Null Sector Attacked

Then one day, Null Sector attacks, and the campus is forced into action. Students are instructed to play their part, with Fire College students sent out to help with citizen evacuation. Wuyang, though, after being rejected for help by his sister, is stuck in the medical tent offering aid as a Water College Student.
Just as he’s finishing patching up a kiddo, a group of the Fire College students returns and explains that the evacuation took a turn for the worse. Furthermore, they reveal that Wuyang’s sister is still out there, as she forced them to flee.
Who’s gonna save her now? Our boi, Wuyang, of course! He jumps into action with his fancy water powers and proves their worth in combat situations, saving his sister’s life. And guess what, he manages to make his parents proud with these actions, earn a new level of love and respect from his sister, and discover significant self-worth following this turn. Let’s go, Wuyang! We love a solid feel-good story.
