Overwatch 2 Players Win Change to Cassidy’s NERF Skin

Cassidy's Nerf collab skin in OW2.

During Season 17, Overwatch 2 continues to feed eager fans more crossover content with the latest addition of the NERF collaboration. As the title suggests, this event (mostly) dips away from the standard approach of Overwatch agents cosplaying as various characters from the crossover media, and instead brings focus to weapons. Yup, you can bedazzle some of your favorite heroes with cold, hard, shiny plastic.

However, while most additions cover weapon skins, there has been at least one hero skin included in the bundle, too – Nerf or Nothin’ Cassidy. He’s definitely dressed for the occasion in his little goggles and target-covered cloak/serape, that’s for sure.

Cassidy’s NERF Skin is (Almost) A Total Win!

You’d think classic Cassidy enthusiasts would be absolutely sweating over this pickup and adding it to their collection in a heartbeat, right? Totally! Well….mostly. There has been a shroud of disappointment smothering those who followed through with the ol’ impulse purchase – Cassidy’s NERF gun is tied to the skin.

Usually, this wouldn’t be a problem since this is generally the default way Overwatch skins work. Each unique skin that changes the shape, colors, or effects of a weapon only applies them when that skin is active.

The exception to this is weapon skins, which can be paired with any hero skin of the same character. This lets players mix and match to personalize their mains a little bit more, which has overall been a solid addition.

However, the problem with the NERF collab is that all the other items are weapon skins, meaning players can give their 8-Bit Genji or Medic Baptiste a NERF weapon, for example. Poor Cassidy is forced into wearing his NERF skin if he wants to bring foam bullets to the next Route 66 shootout.

Apparently, It Truly is Nerf or Nothin’ For Cassidy

Rightfully so, this caused quite a bit of disappointment, frustration, and general pushback from players, who obviously want nothing more than to pair his amazing, silly little nerf gun with other skins – such as the Lifeguard or Blackwatch options.

Thankfully, the Overwatch 2 team has taken this player feedback on board and has since announced that a new change is on its way to fix this.

In an upcoming patch, an additional NERF Maverick weapon skin for Cassidy will be available for players to pair with whichever hero skin they’d like. There is no confirmation on when this patch may arrive, but it will likely be around the same time hero trials for Wuyang go live, between August 14 – August 18, 2025.

There’s just one last catch – all of the special effects of the Maverick NERF gun weapon skin will not work unless it is paired with the Nerf or Nothin’ hero skin. But hey, a win is a win, we’ll take what we can get. Right?
